According to Recode, Tesla met with all major music labels about creating a music service for its electric vehicles. We dont know too many details at the moment, but labels reportedly think the auto maker will offer several tiers of streaming.
While this isnt the most obvious next step for a company that is busy ramping up production and releasing new car models, Musk did warn us of an upcoming announcement.
I think it’s very hard to find a good playlist with good matching algorithms,” Musk said at a shareholders call earlier this month, according to the Register. “We have something that works OK right now, but I think it can work really, really great. Yes, but there will be a few announcements on that later this year.”
Implementing such a service would not be difficult for Tesla. Its vehicles already come equipped with a giant infotainment screen and on-board Wi-Fi. The real difficulty is establishing enough relationships with labels to make the service competitive against the likes of Spotify and Apple Music.
Well be refreshing Musks Twitter page for ramblings about how Tesla is going to add music streaming to a portfolio that already includes solar panel roof tiles and semi-autonomous electric cars.
