Robert De Niro: Trump is a ‘flat-out, blatant racist’

Robert De Niro—who just last fall said he’d like to “punch” President Trump in the face—didn’t hold back about the commander-in-chief in a recent interview he gave about the upcoming Emmy Awards, of all things.

He was being interviewed about his Best Lead Actor in a Limited Series nomination for his portrayal of Bernie Madoff in HBO’s The Wizard of Lies, but De Niro couldn’t help but point out the similarities between Trump and the high-end con man he’d played in the series.

“If was smart, he’d be even more dangerous,” De Niro told Deadline. “He’s dangerous as it is. He’s terrible, and a flat-out blatant racist and doubling down on that, and it’s good that he does because he’s going to sink himself.”

The reporter pointed out that De Niro knew the comments were “very much on the record” and said De Niro suggested “the title of this movie could very well apply to the president”—in other words, De Niro has no problem letting everyone know he thinks Trump is a “wizard of lies.” Roasted.

De Niro said he hoped the Emmys would provide an opportunity for more celebrities to publicly criticize the president’s work. “Even at the Emmys it should be a kind of theme in some way…” he said. “At this point, we’re at a crisis in this country with this fool, who never should have gotten into the position that he’s in.”

Stephen Colbert is set to host the awards, which will take place Sept. 17.
