The ‘Spongebob Squarepants’ opening reimagined in anime style feels like an acid trip

The title sequence in Nickelodeon’s Spongebob Squarepants is a big part of the of the show’s lasting success. It originally aired in April 1999, and the show’s opening hasn’t changed since, apart from some slightly brightened colors.

It usually features a picture of a pirate leading into a simple song that outlines the basics of the show. This reimagined anime style version of the intro still leads with Patchy the Pirate—but from there, things get very anime.

Created by YouTuber Narmak, the video is classic anime. Complete with overly dramatic music, an excess of water, and some serious brow furrowing, this is the revamp that you never knew Spongebob needed.

There is too much going on for any written or verbal explanation to do it justice—from a scene of Spongebob running that is straight out of the best Fullmetal Alchemist opening to a few intensely homoerotic moments. Watching it a single time won’t be enough either, after all of the time Narmak spent giving these thoroughly ridiculous underwater characters a new spin.
